For anyone who missed it, pics of the Northern Alberta Lego Users Group
layout at the Edmonton Trains 2000 show are up

Looks like they had a lot of fun!  Lots and lots of work, and it
shows.

Thanks! :)
I'll try to give some insight on your comments...

- They were setting up their layout while people (presumably
attendees) were already watching.  I'd much prefer to have this
completed before anyone is actually let in.  It could be that these
people are simply other exhibitors (and their children) however.

Those were all other exhibitors and show staff.  The setup was on Friday, and
the show wasn't open to the public until Saturday morning.

- On one picture, I noticed a stack of Toys 'R Us business cards.  Did
they have any sort of sponsorship?  Can anyone that has a personal
contact up there check on this?  We should definitely follow up on
this.

No sponsorship, official or otherwise. :/
We got so many people asking where they could get the trains, that Steve
Chapple picked up some business cards from TRU. (He was there anyway, getting
20% off UCS sets.)

- The club logo modelled in lego was nice, but should have been
mounted somehow.  This would be fairly easy to create, and would just
take some time.  It would also be an excellent way for a store to
support the club.  Have a store donate 4 to 10 blue tubs of pieces
(approximately $100 to $250) or more, and away we go.  After the show,
the sign could be kept for other shows, or taken apart and added to
the club stash (after we create the Ldraw instructions, of course!).

Heh... John Koob "threw that together" in the week before the show.  It was a
very cool surprise for most of us. :)  Next time around, it definately gets
mounted somehow - I nearly knocked it over about 10 times.

- They had no interactive area for kids, etc.  I personally think this
is the best route to go.  Model train people typically don't want
anyone touching their layouts anyway, so this fits in well for a train
show.  Interactive areas also require intense supervision, and will
result in lots of stolen stuff, I suspect, no matter how well it's
managed.

We didn't have an interactive area mostly due to space considerations.  The
show was a bit leary of giving us much space at all - 90" x 120" was the best
Michel could get out of them.  (We have tables & track & stuff for a larger
layout, but we couldn't get the space.)  Next year, they'll give us more room.

Michel & I are both favorably inclined towards a play area - can't recall what
the reactions of other NALUGers was/is, though.

Anyway, just a few random thoughts.  More to come, I'm sure.

Ask away.  I'll endeavour to answer. :)

James

Thanks James, for the personal reply! As you probably know from the other posts in .org.ca.vlc, we're going through all of this for the first time right now, so we'll all probably have a few questions for you and your fellow NALUG'ers. As it was, I (...) (24 years ago, 25-Sep-00, to lugnet.org.ca.vlc)
