fer example, the last one i did--

Dan (always seems to be) twice as old as Mike

Mike was 5 years younger than Ben

Ben was 10 years younger than Dan

Solve for Ben (as the clue)

Ben = Dan - 10

Dan = Mike x 2

Mike = Ben - 5

So...

Ben = Dan - 10
Well, what does Dan =?--substitute...

Ben = (Mike x 2) - 10
Well, what does Mike =?--substitute

Ben = ((Ben - 5) x 2) -10

Ben = (2Ben + 10) -10

Ben = 2Ben + 10 - 10

Ben - 2Ben = 2Ben - 2Ben + 0

-Ben = 0

Something is wrong here.......

Ben = Dan - 10

Dan = Mike x 2

Mike = Ben - 5

Ben = Dan - 10 (susbstitute for Dan)

Ben = (Mike x 2) - 10  (substitute for Mike)

Ben = 2(Ben - 5) - 10  (solve for ben)

Ben = 2Ben - 10 - 10

Ben - 2Ben = 2Ben - 2Ben - 10 -10

-Ben = -20

Ben = 20

Kevin

Then I ferget my basic algebra...

Grr!!!

Looking at it, the answer was 20 but I have no idea how to get there for high
school algebra was eons ago...

(...) Ahh, I see my fallacy-- I went -5 x 2 but applied the same rule as when you multiply two negative numbers!!! (two negative numbers multiplied = positive number) Grr!!! Maybe I need a refresher course in mathematics 101 Oh more than likely... (...) (21 years ago, 3-Sep-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
