In fact, if robots must fit in a 12-inch cube, then even if centered on a pipe,
they will potentially stick about 8 and a half inches away from the pipe they're
on. And since there's nothing in the rules that says they need to center
themselves on a pipe, if a robot is built that only hangs onto a pipe by one
corner of itself, it can be about 16 inches (across the diagonal, if you haven't
figured that out by now) away from the pipe it's on.
I would suggest that the pipe maze have a fairly significant "minimal distance"
between parallel pipes.
