Hey now! I might be a quiet lurker, but I'm still here watching and
listening, <evil voice> *always* =))

Well, since I really don't have much to add about BF or taunting SH, so I'll
just hijack this thread to some other topic. :)

Is anyone else as *amazed* as I am that in the past DECADE not a single soul
created any "real" means of programming the Control Labs? "LEGO Engineer"
and the ActiveX controls are nice and have their applications, but they can
hardly compare to the versatility and sheer ease of use of a standalone
"Notepad-n-DOS Prompt" setup. Don't even want to go into all the wonderful
options that are possible with a dedicated IDE.

But anywho, has anyone had any problems with their CLI not responding? It
seems mine does not reply back to the communication initialization (or does
not receive the request on the first place), either way the process gets
stuck on the 'open comms' stage. Is there anything I'm missing from the
hardware-software setup aside from a regular everyday serial port cable and
simply calling a StartLegos() method of the OCX control
(http://troyda.eas.muohio.edu/paper2.html)? I'm also aware of the
"SerialPort" key in the registry and I've doubled checked the settings.

The error I'm getting is "Lego Control Box is not functioning.", which is
part of the error handling for a failed communications request (you can look
up that exact string in LegoCtl.cpp, if you have the source code)

It seems all normal signs of life are present in my CLI - the red and the
green ('On') lights are on, and power is being supplied to the 4 blue sensor
ports and the central "always-on" port.

If it makes any difference, I'm running a Win2k Pro /w SP4; tried using the
ActiveX under VB6.0 and VC++6.0; tested on both Com ports, however I did not
try to 'play' with the port settings; the serial cable is about 2m long and
is light-gray in color :)

<frustration venting mode off>

Should probably x-post this to .robotics or something (why isn't there an
official Control Lab newsgroup anyway?).

Um, Ivan - I thought I mentioned that I had a fully functional Java driver for the Control Lab. I use 2 dos windows (one to run "java Test", the other "javac Test.java") and a text window. For the record, I use TextPad, not Notepad. It has syntax (...) (21 years ago, 13-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
