Iain came by today and we ended up building a floating arm trebuchet to see
what it would be like.  In about an hour, we put together the model after
using references from trebuchet.com.
Links seem to provide lots of  info and even plans.

Anyways, enjoy the video.
Nice.

It's defintely doable as an event, but it has to be outside.  I'm not going
to even consider running trebuchets inside Lillian H Smith.  Maybe in the
new Bahen Center on campus, but it needs a LOT of clearance.
Question:  As there is no need for a mindstorm, would this not be better as a
timed event where the unit is built the day of the event and/or have everyone
limited to the same bricks?

(...) ... that takes a rather limited view of trebuchet optimization, doesn't it? ;) Suddenly I'm envisioning little seeker robots who roam around, trying to locate the target (presumably, other peoples' trebuchets?). Once located, the information (...) (22 years ago, 28-Aug-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
