Are the posted rules final?

are they ever???

Has there been any discussion of how the robots
are positioned initially (can we place them in any position within the
starting square)?

i thought "we" agreed that the flag will be in a known position (dead
center of the table) and that you are free to angle your robot as much
as you want within the 18" starting square.

Have we decided whether a robot must cross the gap or can
it 'reach' from it's own table.

the reach across is a known and acceptable method of grabbing the flag.
if you reach and touch the flag 1 point, if you lift it one point.

I assume there is a 5 minute time limit.

I might knock this back to 3 minutes just because 5 minutes of 2 robots
missing the flag will get boring.

What is the purpose of defining a tie if total points is all that matters?

not sure.... I'll ask Calum.

Finally, I assume that the contest is over the instant one of the robots
lifts the flag.

Yes

Speaking of points, I think we should endeavor to be a little more formal in
running the contest, specifically, I think we should try to have each robot
compete against all the others. In our last contest a medium strength robot
could actually accumulate more total points by being 'ready' more often and
thus competing more frequently.

Formal is tough.....

I'm not trying to be mean BUT

are you suggesting that we outline a play off list BEFORE the game,
post it, and if you are NOT ready when its your turn you lose that round
by default??

this would be valid and is done in many other places, BUT is it the
nature of our group?

any other form of being lax and then this could be perceived as being
unfair to those that are ready.

I suggest we TRY the "ready or else" you loose method.    we can draw up
a chart of players.  like we always do via the graph method, and post
it.  we can even just do the graph thing using letters. and as robots
show up on the game day we assign a letter.   if we are STRICT about
"ready or else" and we POST IT NOW....   ugh

thoughts???

(...) I agree that becoming a little more formal is not really us, but, I do think that being fair is a more important part of what we do. We can post the individual contests and to the extent possible re-schedule individual contests to accommodate (...) (22 years ago, 24-Jul-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) You!...write a macro that works!!! Know what...I no longer have to pretend that you wrote something funny! Anyway, I think I'll have a robot for this contest...I worked on an idea for a couple of hours tonight, and so far, it seems (...) (22 years ago, 24-Jul-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
