For what its worth.... all the types of robots were valid entries under

that means.. the GRAVITY bots, the tower bots, and those FAST cool,
easily catapulted bots are all valid.

Sure, I agree that everything there was a valid entry (maybe not a valid "robot"
by my definition of "robot," but we can argue that endlessly), but are the
competitions about building an interesting and clever robot, or scanning the
rules for loopholes? By the way, the "FAST cool easily catapulted bot" (which I
liked very much and one of the few "show stoppers" that have ever been at an rtl
event!) would still be 100% valid under my suggested additional rules.

Well, there's a balance here.  If we say, you have to use a motor, it rules out a number of interesting little "shrapnel-bots" which use a strategy that is simply to obstruct.   If you say, have a certain size, then you rule out other methods, like perhaps hanging a counterweight over the other end (which was an idea I dropped around Wednesday night.

In designing the contest we don't want to rule out too many things.  I personally think the little latch mechanism is pretty damned clever.   I'd already thought about doing the stilt before Iain had mentioned it, but I figured it was okay because there's ways to counter that.  For until I got an email from Iain saying he wasn't going with a stilt, I actually had planned to build a giant "stilt smasher" :)  DaveK's robot could also handle RobA's tower, for example.

Calum

I wasn't smart enough to come up with a simple non-powered ring mechanism that latches on to the middle bolt and mucks things up for big strong bots, so (...)
