OK, lets just set the record straight Mr. Tsang, and that other chick! (aka
smurfette)
1. it was ~I~ who borrowed a 10 GIG spare drive from Calum to PUT all that data
on.
2. I was following ALL of calums advice for a clean install of XP, on a
"decent" computer (formerly the SUPERCOMPUTER (TM) (C) (pat pending) )
3. Calum ~TOLD~ me to install ALL the security updates upon clean install,
before ANYTHING else. (stand by cause this next one in important)
4. CALUM strongly advised me to install SP2 even thought all my research, and
other geeks said NOT TO!!!! but calum is MY geek, so i did it.
5. yes, calum did tell me to physically disconnect the spare data drive, AND I
DID (for the FIRST round of xp - install
6. with a clean machine, fully updated, AND with SP2, the machine became very
erratic, and buggy. my Audio would not work, EVEN with the latest drivers from
the vendor...
7. WHEN i asked my geek wass-up he says, "oh i don't know, i NEVER installed
sp2 myself, looks like now i wont"
!WHAT! calum you are such a dingle-tit! guess what folks, you CAN NOT cleanly uninstall SP2...... so i did what any other person would do, I stared again.... after having gone through the install once, I felt it was OK to keep the spare data drive connected.... BIG MISTAKE!!
~IN MY DEFENSE~
i may be a poor speller, BUT when i get to choose which drive i want formatted
to install XP on, and my only 2 options are the 10 gig (spare) or the main 40
gig unit... i clearly highlited the MAIN 40 GIG drive.... I even DOUBLE CHECKED
IT based on calums anecdote of other friends who have done the same thing...
UPON CLEAN install of xp with all the updates NOT SP2, i go to look for my D
drive, and there it is. and to quote from my friends from Quebec....
"There was all my data, GONE."
SO, because of calum, I needed to install XP twice... and subsequently had to
spend until 4 AM running various data recovery software to get back about 1 gig
of baby pictures....
AND BEFORE ANYONE ELSE FEELS THEY NEED TO PROPHESIZE FROM ON HIGH
yes, i burn cd backups, and yes i have a partial cd back up of the baby pics,
but i do not back up as often s i should.... to paraphrase from some good book,
"let ye who ALWAYS back up, cast the first stone"
sigh,
Chris.
the good news is that all my pics, mp3's, and various software was fully
recovered... AS WELL as a number of images, and files that were errased from
when the drive was CALUMS. web page to follow.
