Works well with 3 bricks vertical offset, 1 stud horizontal.
There is also 12 + 24, but that suffers from a similar problem. The best I can
come up with is 1 brick vertical, 2 studs horizontal, but there's a little too
much play.

No, chain links cannot be used with double-bevel gears :(
