I think your attitude toward the competition is important to. You can approach it in the I'm going to win this, the I'm going to see if I can build something that works or the I'm going to go nuts and see what happens. For the most part I'm in the (...) (URL) an example of a very big, but very simple 'bot. It's interesting to look at it now and see all the different modules there. But it worked, and the program was very simple. Easy - the most important consideration is to keep it simple. Every feature or capability or software response you build in lets your bot DO something, but it adds failure modes.
