Oh yes! Relo is one time pain. Travel is ongoing strain.
However for me, we are pinned in the GR general area by a desire to be
close to my wife's extended family (out of the cohort of about 20 or so
grandchildren (people more or less my age) of the patriarch/matriarch of
the family, that is, my GM and GF in law, 15 or so live within 1/2 hour
of the grandparental farm, which means my kids have something like 40
cousins they see on a semi regular basis).
Further, we're pinned in our school district because I am too poor to
pay the double tax of property tax AND private school for my kids, so if
I MUST use public schools I am by gosh going to use the best school
district in the entire state, to wit, Forest Hills. Our new house (knock
on wood, we had our home inspection today, went well) is not only in
the same district, it is in the same elementary, 5th-6th, middle and
high school boundaries.
Given that, it was either get market rate in this area or make something
like 1.5x by travelling. No brainer. Especially since I LIKE being a
consultant. You never have to clean up your own messes (just kidding).

| (...) Yeah, I know. I'm on a bit of a "I finally accomplished this goal I set for myself and I'm hopeful that I will get to do more cool stuff now" high right now, so I'm seeing most things with "me" tunnel vision. I'll calm down after the holidays. (...) (25 years ago, 26-Dec-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
