Welcome, Mike... There's a buncha advice that goes around, but
you won't KNOW you need it for about a year :-)
Looking at my file of quotes, I'm interested to find that
after all this time, the oldest ones seem the most useful:
MAN IS A TOOL-MAKING ANIMAL. WITHOUT TOOLS, HE IS NOTHING.
WITH TOOLS, HE IS EVERYTHING.
THOMAS CARLYLE 1795-1881
A good slogan can stop analysis for fifty years.
- Wendell Willkie
ELEGANCE IS SIMPLICITY
THE ULTIMATE RESULT OF COMPLEXITY IS CHAOS
CMDR. GRACE HOPPER, USN, RET.
A LOT OF THINGS HAVE HAPPENED IN THE 20TH CENTURY,
AND MOST OF THEM PLUG INTO THE WALL.
ALAN KAY

And some definitions you'll need:
HARD is what it IS
SOFT is what it DOES
SOFT is never having to say HOW IT WORKS (Baird Smith IBM 198? )
CASE Computer aided Software Engineering
CAG Computer-aided Groping (American Machinist Aug 1985)
CTSE Computer Thwarted Software Engineering ... David King 1987

OK, enough philosophy.. Now Get To Work!
