Are yopu saying that _all_ factors in a job are klnown to you
beforehand? I submit that it's damn hard to know, in advance, whether
or not your boss is a prick.. but that aside.

No, not all factors.  But having an ISP that wants to market its
service to a population that sees full-color graphics, snazzy
websites, etc from the competition expect you to make something
similar for them doesn't qualify as being a prick, does it?  They're
paying me pretty good money to do a job and they want it done the
way they think will do them the most good.

I'm not a marketing guru, but I know that even as someone who KNOWS
substance is more important than form, I sometimes find myself
thinking, "mmmm.... this is just plain ugly - what an amatuerish
job."

Reminds me of a talk I had with a buddy who scoffed at me learning

I'm sorry, did I sound scoffing? I didn't intend to be. If you like
doing things the Microsoft way, well, sure, more power to you. I'm not
entirely MS-free myself..

No, I think you saved your scoffing for the other thread where you
told me I wasn't smart enough to interpret your smartass remarks.

My buddy was the one doing the scoffing.  You just reminded me of
him, not necessarily that you were scoffing in the same manner, or
even scoffing at all.

Blah. I bet those teachers had a real _lot_ of linux boxen around, and
a few experienced unix admins, right?[2]

Exactly.  Although he meant that I could do it in Perl and run it on
a Win32 machine (and presumably on a Mac, I guess).

You have someone you can call at weird hours in the night for Access
problems? Cool.

Access AND VB problems.  Sure, one of my good friends and coworkers.
We take care of each other, and we both don't sleep much, so why
not?

Until, of course, the court judgement comes in. Personally, I'd start
hedging my bets now rather than later. I don't see MS existing as the
market force it is now, say, 5 or 10 years from now.

I hear you.  That's why I'm actively pursuing another interest at UT
- networking.  I plan to be CCNA by the first of the year as well,
and I've already become the main contact between my group and the
main networking group, with more Cisco training to come.
