  Another heirarchical DB question

Hi: First thanks to Christopher, Steve and Larry for your help with my last question. Here's todays question. Say that you had a list of data that needed to be not only in heirarchical order but also each child of a given parent needed to be in a (...) (24 years ago, 20-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

(...) Not because they had copies (that's fair use under the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992, United States Code, Title 17, section 1008), but because they *distributed* copies for which they had no license (17 USC s. 1103). Chris FUT: (...) (24 years ago, 20-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

(...) But there's *exactly* no difference. If I make an MP3 of a track from my own CD, it'll be exactly completely the same as one I download from the internet (assuming the same software and options used to create it). If the law doesn't recognize (...) (24 years ago, 19-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

(...) Because in one case it's deemed fair use; in the other you're republishing the work. But I don't claim to understand the legal intricacies to really be able to explain this intelligently. However, since MP3.com was sued for this exact same (...) (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

(...) Why would it be illegal to download an MP3 version of a CD you own, yet be legal to rip your own? I mean, the whole point of digital media is that two copies are exactly identical.... (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

(...) You can always encode the MP3's from your own CD's. You'd need somewhere like 80 CDs to get 10 GB og .mp3-files, though. But that number depends heavily on the bitrate you choose when encoding, as well as the running lenght of your CDs! (...) (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

(...) Download? For most of the MP3s that I want, that would be illegal. So instead I rip my own -- now I can stream MP3s to work from home without people stealing my CDs any more. :) Not to mention how much easier it is to create playlists... Chris (...)   Re: Netscape 6

(...) Netscape 6 includes a mail client and all the stuff Communicator does. You can also install them in parallel with no problem. I really recommend getting a nightly mozilla build from (URL) instead of the "official" version. (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Netscape 6

Question: I'm running Communicator 4.75 or something. Can I download navigator 6, and "integrate" it in Communicator? Or maybe they have Communicator 5 too? --Tobias (...) (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Arrggh!

How do you get *10 GB's* of MP3's? Doesnt that take *years* to download? Or maybe you're running DSL/Cable/ISDN/whatever? --Tobias, who only has about 300 MB of MP3's... Then again, the iBook harddrive isn't big... (...) (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: A heirarchical database question

(...) Agreed. But the original design was broken. I proposed two alternatives, both less redundant and both "more correct", although flaws could be found in either one by the determined examiner. ++Lar (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: James Mathis really has caught the 8-wide bug!

(...) Thanks for not poking fun....here, hear, they sound the same.... I use a fruity computer, so I won't be able to help, sorry. Chris (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Netscape 6

(...) Yeah. I'm not too happy with it -- it's significantly worse than the current nightly builds of Mozilla. I understand the marketing pressure to release something, anything, but it would have been so much nicer if they'd waited another month. (...) (24 years ago, 18-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) All is well now EXCEPT that i can't get printing to my shiny HP 2100 Laserjet (network connected) to work yet. Installed JetAdmin and I created a port but can't get connected to it. JetAdmin can print a page fine, but the printer isn't seen by (...) (24 years ago, 17-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: A heirarchical database question

(...) Agreed. But sometimes, the price paid for normalization is too high. It depends on the level of adhoc querying against the data. And the skill level of the developer. Steve (24 years ago, 17-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
