Re: Making Communicator 4.5 forget headers ?

Ray Sanders wrote ages ago, but I've been away: (...) Same here. One thing that could possibly work is deleting the lugnet.general.snm (I think) file in the lugnet.com subfolder of the news subfolder of the Netscape user folder (good grief, that's (...)   Re: Databases and the Internet Question or Two

(...) Agreed. As [oh, geez, I can'r remember his name now - MS database project manager guy at a conference I attended] said, "sure, there's a time to move up from Access. That time is when the second user will need to connect." -- -Steven "Nothin' (...) (25 years ago, 15-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: Databases and the Internet Question or Two

If you're talking large scale commercial you need a RDBMS, nothing else will scale big enough (well, maybe IMS but that's pretty trailing edge at this point, you need a CICS/MVS box to drive it) And from among the RDBMS's your choices are basically (...)   Re: Databases and the Internet Question or Two

(...) I'm using MySQL. It has it's limitations (I bet Larry will expand on that) but it's open-source and free (in most cases). For a comercial project I would use Oracle (which is about as far from free as you can get with databases). KL (25 years ago, 14-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Databases and the Internet Question or Two

Hello! Curiosity: What kinds of database systems are used (i.e. Essbase, Sybase, dBase, Access, Approach, AS400, whatever..), are typically used by companies, or recommended by consultants, when the source of the data would be supplied by internet (...)   Re: Netscape Navigator 4.[67] memory leak under RHL6.1+Gnome?

(...) Yah, I sure would if it were...it can't be that much worse than NN. The Win32 version of Opera drove me insane in the way it rendered stuff and handled cookies, but at least it was stable. BTW, I gave Sun's StarOffice browser a twirl tonight (...) (25 years ago, 14-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: Netscape Navigator 4.[67] memory leak under RHL6.1+Gnome?

(...) Well, did some more digging and there actually are hundreds of Usenet posts about this very problem, scattered across various newsgroups. There doesn't seem to be any fix. --Todd (25 years ago, 12-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: Netscape Navigator 4.[67] memory leak under RHL6.1+Gnome?

(...) Ack, what am I smoking? I'm looking at the wrong number. 30M is the non- swapped-out portion. The real size is actually up there around 80M, and slowly climbing. Now 90M. :-/ Well, at least it's less bad now, even if it's still pretty bad. (...) (25 years ago, 12-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: Netscape Navigator 4.[67] memory leak under RHL6.1+Gnome?

(...) I kept searching around on the net for more info on memory leaks in the Linux release of NN, and everything (not much) that turned up was either really old or only for Win32 or didn't match what I was seeing. So I figured it *had* to be (...) (25 years ago, 12-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: Netscape Navigator 4.[67] memory leak under RHL6.1+Gnome?

(...) Good to see that Netscape is continuing with its tradition of providing the same level of garbage as Microsoft, while getting to be thought of as the picked-on underdog hero with a great product in the little browser war... And before the holy (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: Making Communicator 4.5 forget headers ?

(...) Well, I did try: unsubscribe, quit Communicator, relaunch, then resubscribe. Somehow it kept everything. They were still there. I *might* try deleting lugnet.com, but I want to avoid loosing all the read/unread stats from the other groups. I (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Netscape Navigator 4.[67] memory leak under RHL6.1+Gnome?

Anyone else out there running Netscape Navigator 4.6 or 4.7 under RHL6.1 + Gnome seeing a slow but massive memory leak? I'm seeing sizes like 200+ MB after a few hours of running without restarting it. It gets really annoying because of all the swap (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Making Communicator 4.5 forget headers ?

Does anyone know how to get Netscape Communicator 4.5 (Macintosh) to forget/expire/whatever the older headers from a newsgroup (such as lugnet.general) ? lugnet.general is getting close to 15K headers and my Mac (233/PPC) is beginning to really (...)   Re: Hey Tom Stangl!

(...) Hrmmm, I've been busy for a while so I don't remember all the details, but right off the bat, I'd say upgrade to 4.08. Avoid Communicator like the plague (at least I do) or go with IE 5. Works for me. (25 years ago, 10-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  CGI programming

Can someone suggest the name of a good book on CGI programming, starting from the ground up. Note to others: Don't start asking questions at staff meetings about web utilities your group needs :). (25 years ago, 10-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
