  Re: Fellowship

(...) Hmm... Did it have the same sky-high production values of Hitchhiker's and Dr. Hoo? Dave! (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Fellowship on Film

This is a nifty movie, no doubt, but from the perspective of a dedicated Tolkien fan, I am somewhat disappointed because much of the really important character dynamics have been neglected or underdeveloped - dynamics that are essential to the tale.   Re: LoTR # 1 on IMDB

(...) I might have used a different metaphor, but I agree. One of my problems with the current LOTR movie is that I REALLY don't have a lot of prior knowledge of the material. Noeckel suggests that this film should be viewed as the first part of a (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Fellowship on Film

(...) I agree. In the book, Aragorn really, REALLY wanted to go to Gondor. But after Gandalf died, he knew it was his duty to protect Frodo and attempt to lead the quest for the Ring. He was in great doubt as to what to do. That is why the (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Fellowship on Film

(...) Sounds like you have a brave little guy. My step-daughter is nearly 6, and her dad let her see a cartoon version of LoTR a few weeks back. She has been unable to sleep through the night due to her terror of the Black Knights. I saw rows of (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) Well, I don't know about him, but this site is an interesting discussion of LotR (which is actually satire, if you read it closely): (URL) (Of course, that's not really one for the kids, despite its lack of vulgarity.) best LFB (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: LoTR # 1 on IMDB

(...) It's just an initial reaction, based in part on enthusiasm. Yes, I enjoyed it (note that it is up for a Golden Globe for Best Picture already!), no it isn't the best movie of all time, but in my view it is only the first third of an (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: LoTR # 1 on IMDB

(...) Yes, its well deserved…and its only gonna get better with the sequels. Mind you, the first book -IS- the slow one…it sets the pace and background for the next two!!! “Bigger than Star Wars” Indeed, --==RiçhärÐ==-- (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: LoTR # 1 on IMDB

(...) Modern movies tend to spike to the top of the list, because they're fresher in people's minds. I seem to remember, though, that they tend to settle down a little bit after time. Adrian (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Fellowship on Film

(...) My son is ten. The only problem he had was what the other poster mentioned: even though he went to the restroom just before the start of the movie, he had to go midway through (I sent him at the safest point when little would happen onscreen) (...)   Re: LoTR # 1 on IMDB

(...) It was a good movie. A solid, though flawed, interpretation of a book that is among the greatest masterpieces of literature ever produced. As a movie, the Fellowship of the Ring lacked the subtleties of emotion and sensitivity that sets a (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Note: the second time through I listened to the music more. It's good too. Darn it, it has been in my head all day. You can hear the entire album in QuickTime: (URL) movies cost 30% less in the Midwest... (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Fellowship on Film

Here's something I don't understand. WHY would anyone take children under the age of 10 to see this film. First off, it's rated PG-13. Secondly, it's 3 hours long. Finally, the story isn't suitable for younger viewers anymore than the Matrix was. (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

If you google the phrase "Spooky Bible Stories"...

  Re: Fellowship on Film

(...) Yes, kids younger than 10 should start reading the book. By the time they finish they will have no problem with the film. (It is PG-13.)   Re: Sometimes being vocal about the hobby pays off

(...) D'oh! Remember that Seinfeld episode where George remembers, only too late, the great comeback/zinger line he *should* have used? Here's the way I should have responded the first time... LEGO fan? Well, of course I'm a LEGO fan. I've been a (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Sometimes being vocal about the hobby pays off

(...) No need to duck and run..... though grinning is expected. :) Notice that I said "big LEGO fan". Does that make me a BLF? Is there a "LEGO Acronyms for Dummies" book that I could buy? I'm really struggling with some of these. But 'big' is about (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
