Let me take it from another perspective. YHWH, or God, really IS a God of
war, but he's more than that. I see Jesus as the completer of the picture
of God. That is, revelation is progressive.
If you look at God's relationship with Noah, then Abraham, then Moses, then
David, assorted prophets, and finally what Jesus did on the cross, (through
ripping the veil, fulfilling the law, etc)
If you just pick and choose your favorite "Jesus moments" you can still get
a distorted picture of God. (Some see Jesus as a kind of love hippie 'cuz
they don't really read the book, just pick out the passages to suit their
viewpoint) I'm sure there are lots of Lugnuts who had strict fathers that
were still compassionate and understanding. God the Father is the same way.
On the cross, Jesus demonstrated the law (the need for death and blood shed
to remove sin) as well as compassion (becoming sin so that He bore the brunt
of our sin, not we ourselves).
But I agree with Mr Marchetti that God isn't quite how Christians think He
is. (forgive me if I'm misquoting, but of course if you don't think there is
good or evil, there's nothing wrong anything I say :O) ) We all come with
pre-conceived ideas based on our experiences and excess baggage. That's why
a living relationship with God is vital, so that in our walk with Him, He
can deal with our issues.
