Given the sheer numbers represented by organized religion in this country, and
how strongly many members feel about certain issues, you can shout it until
you're blue in the face, but the only way it'll have any affect is to pass an
ammendment to prevent religion from trying to influence government. That's not
going to happen. There's too much of a religious component on both sides of the
Republican/Democrat split, so doing something like that would be political
suicide, not just for the individuals, but for the party as a whole.

Unless the US Supreme Court gets stacked with a socially liberal judiciary, I
doubt that'll ever happen, though it's not unreasonable to expect that they'd
rule to allow same-sex unions to enjoy the same rights and priveledges of
marriages, if not the same name.

They already do, in a more mundane sense. The Catholic church has rules against
recognizing a marriage involving a divorced person.

"Partnered". Maybe "mated". Or you could always appeal to the vulger and say
you're "shacked up".
