Careful with financial assessments of the costs of the war. Generally they
tally what was spent by the government, not the cost. What of the externalised
costs borne by others? The value of the lost American lives (the cost of which
is borne by their families), and the lives lost among those simply standing
nearby when the fun starts. Not to mention the considerable cost to American
families of simply having over 100,000 mothers, fathers, sons and daughters
deployed overseas for long periods.
The cost to many families will be considerably higher than $3,400.
And if indeed, as many seem to believe, the war in Iraq is creating a less
secure international community than would have been, what of the costs of the
additional security measures we have unavoidably committed ourselves as part of
the war.
Costing is a complex business.
