Why is this thread called Liberty vs Socialism?
Liberty and socialism arent opposites anyway
|
Sure they are. Show me a socialist country where you are free, in all senses
of the word.
|
|
This is a false argument; there is no country which is free in all senses of
the word. Just like there is no country which is completely socialist or
completely free market.
|
But a world with complete (personal) freedom cant exist because the more
freedom you get the nearer anarchy you get and then you lose the freedom
because another persons freedom impinges on yours.
To my mind a county like Denmark (which has a pretty socialist attitude) gets
as near to a good balance as anywhere. Im not saying that it is perfect by
anymeans but to my mind infinately preferable to the US. (plus its the home of
Lego!)

I know that this doesnt really answer your question but my point is that the
two arent mutually exclusive
|
I agree; the centre-left approach to life in Norway, Sweden and Denmark is
laudable. Norway manages to a have 1st class welfare system, the highest
standard of living in the world and punches well above its weight on the
international stage.
See
here:
Because Norways oil wealth is managed by the government with an eye to
benefiting future generations as well as todays, the $7,000 per capita income
from the industry doesnt go directly into each Norwegians pocket but into a
fund. Still, the huge budget surpluses provided by the oil money allow the state
to fully finance what in most countries are personal expenses, such as saving
for retirement or a childs college education.
