Go, Baby, Go!!!

Talk about ethnocentric views -- could that author have had more ready
judgments about other people and their way of life? And talk about your
straw man arguments: Arafat at the head of a Palestinian state as the
desired goal?  Uh...no.  Maybe Buckley and the boys should refrain from
taking those long yacht trips to just outside of U.S. waters before they hit
their typewriters!

I can sympathize with media fatigue, but not with indifference to the human
suffering that we may not only be enabling but actually causing ourselves.
It's easy to feel overwhelmed -- I have my own problems, we all have our own
problems, and the M.E. is after all a little place with their problems.  But
the M.E. standoff is obviously more meaningful than one can account for in
miles of land or numbers of lives -- clearly it has become symbolic of a
clash over faith, ethics, values, culture, and perceptions.  One might even
goes so far as to assert that if we can achieve peace in the M.E. then there
is hope for the future and some reason to believe in the general "goodness"
of our species.  This is why it is so disheartening to fail again and again.
As Evelyn Waugh might have put it: it's like a blow upon a bruise.

(...) Well, I want to start at the gate, to see who would predict my rather predictable response. I see the core of Mr. Derbyshire's argument right here: "What a world! You can only read a certain amount of this stuff before you start to avert your (...) (22 years ago, 22-May-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
