You may not like it, but this is fairly standard practice in the Big
Corporate world. :-)
In fact that's why EDI was invented, to allow for interchanging all this
mundane stuff like purchase orders/confirmations, shipment advice/receipt,
invoices, etc... the idea being that if everyone accepted a common
electronic format, less paper.
It even sort of works. Just lots of interconnections to build.
Mercator, the firm I work for as a system architect, is a pretty significant
(but not the only) player in interconnecting EDI and proprietary systems and
such like.
