Just FYI, here's the replies I have received from KBKids.com. I wanted to
check the goverment sites to clarify if this "FTC rule" is valid for
backordered items, as KBKids says it is. But I haven't had time to look. It
still would seem that a back-ordered item should follow a different rule.

Thank you for your order with KBkids.com. Due to overwhelming demand, we have
been forced to cancel your backordered "101402 (2) Amazon Ancient Ruins
(Lego)".
We apologize for this inconvenience and unfortunately, we do not have an
estimated date of availability.
Due to legal restrictions on e-commerce we are only able to hold an order for
15 days. If the order cannot be fulfilled within this time frame, we must
cancel the order. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience
this may have caused. As a reminder, your credit card will not be charged for
this canceled backordered item.

| (...) It is. I suspect the problem is that (iirc) they have to give you a definite date of expected arrival if they offer you the option of waiting for a backordered item. Ran (24 years ago, 29-Jul-00, to lugnet.market.shopping)
