OK, before I get into the Midwest topic, I'll discuss something LEGO
related.....

Macaroni bricks are not found in any Basic/Freestyle sets.

OK, now back to the Midwest....

There is no easy answer.

If you say that there are 4 areas of the USA, then it's the Northeast South,
Midwest, West.

If you say that there are more than that, then you could include Mountain
States, Plain States, Great Lakes States, etc...

But with just 4 regions, the Midwest goes from the Pennsylvania border to nearly
the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  And the center of it all would probably
be Chicago.

Rustbelt was a name that USED to apply to the aging rusting cities of the
Midwest.  But with the US economy going so well, you would be hard pressed to
find any "rust".  Even the economically distressed city of Detroit is undergoing
a $5 billion building boom, and the Michigan unemployment rate at about 3.5% a
40 year low.  With technology companies thriving here, rustbelt really no longer
applies - especially in the heavy population centers of Illinois, Ohio and
Michigan (12, 11, and 10 million people respectively).

To all,

I just wanted to show the Lego model, and where it came from. I didn't
think it would lead to a big discussion on where "midwest" was.

Yeah, I count 7 articles here now on this thread discussion what "midwest"
is.  Probably a good time to take this over to .loc.us...it's getting pretty
far off-topic for .general.

It
sounds apparent that different people from different regions have a
different definition.

Well, everyone knows that Minneapolis/St.Paul is the city at the heart of
the Midwest!

I just it was a neat model! :)

Me too!

(...) I thought the 'rustbelt' just implied that there was a lot of heavy manufacturing going on. Steve (25 years ago, 4-May-99, to lugnet.loc.us)
