I don't think so. We've been running some of the same trains at NCLTC for nine
shows (some shows for over a month), and the well-run trains still work. The
undercarriage is well-worn where the bogies touch the plates, but the wheels
roll fine.
I don't think it has anything to do with the color of the plastic, either. I
have as many defective black wheel sets as gray ones. Most of my defective black
wheels sets came from the Metroliner re-issue and later. The Santa Fe, being so
heavy, shows off the defect the most, although I've had the same problem with
long Metroliner trains and with custom cars.
I too would love to hear about a LEGO-sponsored wheel exchange, but we're
talking about a lot of wheels. But I would settle for an official word of when
the problem was introduced and when it was fixed.
