In fixing my wheelsets, I've observed that the gray wheelsets are
made of a softer (more butter-like) plastic. Instead of a file, I use
a hobby knife to cut out a small portion of the frame where the
rubbing occurs. It's easier to cut the gray vs. the black plastic.
Also, using the knife is much faster (for me at least), and you don't
get as much (if any) collateral damage since the process is quicker.
I can post pictures of where to make the cuts if anyone is interested.
Also, on sets 10020 (Loco) and 10022 (Passenger Cars II) I've
replaced the plates on the underside of the fuel/water(?) tanks with
tiles. The studs on these plates showed signs of wearing on the
track. Switching to tiles gives half a plate more clearance which is
useful if your track is even the slightest bit uneven.

| IMHO, the problem lies in this theory: * The axles are made of metal. * Metal is harder than plastic. * When putting metal in direct contact with plastic, the plastic will wear. * Check the spot where the point of the metal axle meets the plastic (...) (21 years ago, 4-Aug-03, to lugnet.trains)
