Good question!  I've been wondering this myself.  I just recently went
through the grueling process of filing down the plastic in all 28 gray
wheel-sets of my Santa Fe Kit.  What an improvement!

I also filed down enough wheels to make a six car Santa Fe successfully
negotiate a 'dog-bone' torture track (all curves) on a low regulator speed, with
one motor. Like Paul, I thought I had it all figured out.

This weekend, I ran it on our GATS layout and it started out fine, but got
slower over time. Eventually it would stop. I stole a second engine and ran it
some more, but even with the two motors, it would come to a halt after less than
an hour. Maybe my filing job was not as good as I hoped, or maybe one of the
motors is defective.

I had the same problem with my subway train: after running for about three
hours, it would grind to a halt. Unfortunately, I couldn't get at it without
disassembling the subway and interrupting two track loops on top, but
fortunately, unplugging the regulator for five minutes or so allowed the motor
to cool and/or reset and start working again. As the day wore on, the halts
became more frequent; the last half hour, it didn't run at all. (A second motor
on day two kept it running for the remainder of the show.)

The subway train uses at least some of the same batch of defective wheels, so
I'll need to file those down too. I probably have a few hundred sets of
defective wheels -- it's a little discouraging to think about filing them all
down.
