Even more annoying for you would be the fact that 800/888/877 are "toll

If you live in the US, 800/888/877 numbers are free calls.  If you don't
live in the US they don't work.  This is why most US companies that do
international business list both a toll free 800/888/877 number and a direct
(read: toll) number.

Actually it depends.  In both Canada and the USA some 800 numbers
will work in both countries, and some won't.  It's up to the owner
of the 800 number if they want international calls to be toll-free.
Obviously making a number toll-free for more than one
country will cost more because of the long-distance charges.  So
most companies just make their numbers toll-free in the one country.
