Somewhat related personal anecdote:

I first got connected to RTL, and finished coming out of my dark ages, when
I was poking around CompuServe's usenet connection.  At the time (1995),
the interface was entirely server-provided, and extremely ugly/awkward.  It
was possible to get newsreaders to talk to CI$ newsservers, but it was also
ugly/awkward.  Anyway, I had been looking for LEGO resources online, so I
checked usenet.  The experience made me realize how far CI$ had to go to
emerge from its cocoon.

OTOH, CI$ forums are head-and-shoulders above usenet.  Not exactly the same
thing, since forums have file libraries, as well as threaded message
discussion areas and conference rooms (chat areas, basically).
