What are the most valuable Service Packs?

It's been a dull week on the net....... Someone recently asked me which service/parts pack was the most valuable. I had to really think about that one for a while. I guess "rarest" and "most valuable" service packs can mean 2 different things. Now (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) What parts exactly does it contain? And what is unique about them? From J. Lauher's 396 scan it looks like the std. red "counterweight"/hub mount, the yellow stick, and the black piece that the "piston" runs in - or are these larger than (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

I doubt this pack is really all that rare, but one of my favorites is the 5071 Large Wheel Set. This set contains two red locomotive wheelsets of the style that comes in the 7750 12V Electric Steam Locomotive (and as far as I know, only in the (...) On a side note, a good resource for parts packs is at (URL) think it has some pictures (and perhaps numbers) that Pause is missing. Alan (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Thanks Alan. This is definitely worth a bookmark! Gary Istok (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) Everyone (well almost everyone) knows how much I like slopes, so obviously, the most valuable packs to me include slopes. 5216 is obviously a great pack, being that the slopes are black, and include most of the available medium slope (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

I know that list... that used to be what was up on the legowww.com server... (what ever the name of the server was..) till TLG shut it down a while back... The pics are still the same even... (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) Yes, those 2 (each) red, yellow and black pieces are the ones I'm talking about. No they aren't labelled as unique in any catalog. I was only trying to make a point that if you decided (like I did) to make a Thatcher Perkins from scratch (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) But how *are* these different from the ones used in several period train sets? -gbr (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) Hey Rob, I just recently got a set 283 "Sloping Ridge and Valley Bricks" in Blue service pack from the 1958-67 era, which is in the Lugnet Database. It has the following:. (10) 2x2 blue outside corner bricks (rare!) (5) 2x2 blue inside corner (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

I agree with Gary on the 1119 - it is probably the most valuable parts pack out there, just because of the rare parts it contains. However, I doubt it is the rarest - I think some of the old 60s parts packs must be rarer, and its likely that one of (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) I am no Lego train expert, but I think that they are different in that the Thatcher Perkins Locomotive is much much larger than any of the Lego Train locomotives. The Thatcher Perkins was a "model" kit, and not a part of the Lego Train (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

Gary Istok wrote in message <37B3212D.FBD2183B@u...ch.edu>... (...) <Rob likes slopes snipped> (...) Gary, Rob, others... I have a 283 parts pack, too, in red. I wondered about the 2x2 piece Gary mentioned as only being available from 58-67. Its a (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

Actually, Gary, I think that they may well be the same as those used in the Lego train Line during the same era. These two pictures seem to confirm that at least the yellow and black parts are the same; I suspect the red one is also: (URL) even (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) Unfortunately, I do not. I DO however have all of the above pieces available to make a pack, so in that way, I do have that set, just no packaging. I've picked up most of my blue outside corners from multiples of set 733 Universal, not (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

Hi Alan, So you got got the other two 5071 packs. I got another two packs prior to these but they had different numbers...I think they were 114# or 10##? I used the first two packs to build a 7750, almost, still can't find the 1x1x2 Black windows or (...) (25 years ago, 13-Aug-99, to lugnet.trains)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

The 396 Thatcher Perkins engine is classed as a "carpet" train as it has a guage which is unsuitable for the standard lego train guage. It was designed to go anywhere the child wanted to push it. Mark H. (...) (25 years ago, 13-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

(...) guage (...) I _do_ have a firm grasp of the obvious :) (though the 396's gauge is narrower than you'd expect from looking at the pictures) - I was asking about the (apparently not) unique rod/piston parts. BTW, where's the panic about the (...) (25 years ago, 13-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: What are the most valuable Service Packs?

(...) OK, here's my other choice for most valuable Service Packs, a Samsonite set - Why the Samsonite (versus the European) version? Because the 1960's Samsonite service packs usually contained more parts than the European (same set number) (...) (25 years ago, 16-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)
