that purpose).  Any of you who are familiar with the 1975 Thatcher
Perkins Locomotive #396 (one of my favorite sets) would recognize set
#1119 as the "rod and piston" (not sure if this is correct train
terminology) parts pack.  This pack has the 6 parts unique to this set.

What parts exactly does it contain? And what is unique about them?
From J. Lauher's 396 scan it looks like the std. red "counterweight"/hub
mount, the yellow stick, and the black piece that the "piston" runs in
- or are these larger than normal?
(BTW, I sure don't remember ever seeing anything labelled in an
appropriate manner for the given (unique pieces for a large set)
functionality in my 396-vintage catalogs...)

The rarest parts pack now? How about "all"? As someone posted
a while ago that US (and other?) parts pack were being cancelled,
I called to confirm, and was told that yes, S@H (or was that CA?
can't remember) has been informed that the utter parts pack end
is coming up, though no hint when.
Anyone who panics at this thought should probably call to confirm,
too, as I can't guarantee that I was told the truth (this rumour
*would* increase short-term parts pack sales, as one can imagine)
or that the plan is still on. When calling, mention how
important parts packs are to you (e.g. for me, they are approaching
90% of what I will buy over the next few years - and I'd really hate
to spend extra money *now* to stock up on plates and slopes
for the next decade or 2).
However, considering the outrageously large number of stupid-and-bad-
for-everyone-involved element/set design/change decisions LG has
made in recent years, I'm appropriately shocked, but not really
surprised.

(10 years from now, "I wish I'd bought a bunch of black slope
packs when they were only a few bucks apiece; now there's only the 2x10
and the 1x2 apex, one each available in the $80 100-piece Town/Mud Mixers
trans-neon-pink/dk-gray/black amorphous blob set)

(...) Yes, those 2 (each) red, yellow and black pieces are the ones I'm talking about. No they aren't labelled as unique in any catalog. I was only trying to make a point that if you decided (like I did) to make a Thatcher Perkins from scratch (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)

It's been a dull week on the net....... Someone recently asked me which service/parts pack was the most valuable. I had to really think about that one for a while. I guess "rarest" and "most valuable" service packs can mean 2 different things. Now (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)
