I've seen color variations in the same part. I ordered a batch of dark-red 1x10
bricks off Bricklink, and about 1/3 of them came in extra dark. Fortunately,
only half of them were going to be built into front-facing surfaces, so all the
off-color bricks could be mostly hidden on the back of the structures (though if
you look across a layout, those specific bricks will stick out like a sore
thumb, since _none_ of the other dark-red parts I bought are that dark).
