TLG 1998 Annual Report —Steve Bliss
Apologies if this has already been discussed (if it was, I probably read the discussion, maybe participated in it, and then forgot about it). TLG's 1998 annual report is online at (URL) Interesting that they owned up (among other things) to (...) (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)

Dear LEGO, A passage in your 1998 Annual Report states: (quoted from (URL), in the section 'Steady as She Goes...') (...) I feel there is a point being missed here: currently, LEGO seems to produce two types of building sets: sets with instructions (...)          Classic Lego sets? (was Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report) —Terry Keller
(...) I zipped thru a TRU the other day, and saw something new. Sets marked as "Classic". I was in a bit of a hurry, so I did not have a chance to do a close examination. I saw two sets, a large box on the lower shelf, and a small one near the top. (...) (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)

Re: Classic Lego sets? (was Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report) —James Brown
(...) That appears to be the 'new' line of basic sets. The numbering scheme is in the 42xx range (4215, 4217, 4222, etc), and the contents don't appear to be much different from other basic sets. James (URL) (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)

Re: Classic Lego sets? (was Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report) —Steve Bliss
(...) Classic sets are in the online catalog at (URL). They should be called 'FreeStyle Redux'. They seem to be the same pieces as FreeStyle, but with packaging featuring modern colors and no kooky creations. Steve (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report —Scott Edward Sanburn
I am reading over it now. Maybe if they want to improve profits, maybe they should start supplying the products their customers want (I.E. bulk purchases, decent sets like SW, no Juniorization, etc.). I know I know, what a concept! You give your (...) (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report —Steve Bliss
(...) Maybe it's a communication disconnect: Market Researcher says: "Kids are frustrated with advanced models" (hidden meaning, not clearly stated: "let's make general sets") Product Developer hears: "We need simpler models" Result: Town, Jr. Steve (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report —Scott Edward Sanburn
(...) Yes, probably. I guess it would not be as bad if they provided a better, (I.E. More advanced) Town sets, or General sets. They don't, and all of the other themes are becoming that as well. It is horrible, I cannot comprehend TLG planning or (...) (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: TLG 1998 Annual Report —Steve Bliss
(...) I agree with what you say. I hate to see TLG sacrifice advanced sets, because some (even most) kids don't like them. If kids need simpler sets, make some of each. On model sets, replace (or enhance) the age range indicator with a "challenge (...) (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)
