Did anyone hear about all the "copies" of lego products?
(snip)

A year ago I was on a 6-month assignment in Shanghai.  One day I went to a big
grocery store I'd never been to before, and while I was browsing the toy aisles,
I saw something that astonished me: knock-off LEGO sets!  It was knock-offs of
early-90's sets in the era of Spyrius/Ice Planet.  They had copied the LEGO
packaging and everything, except they replaced the LEGO logo with a red box that
said "Bright" (well, and it was a very poor-quality picture on the box.)  All
manner of themes were represented: Space, Castle, even something Paradisa-ish.
I think one was supposed to be Ice Planet's 1704, and another was Spyrius' 6889
Recon Robot.  I bought a couple of sets to check them out, and the parts have
the poor quality described elsewhere.  The minifigs had stickers instead of
printed torsos, or had one color of printing (like gold on an "Ice Planet"
torso, which should have blue and white.)  Prices were about 1/8th of what a
similar set would cost in the US.  I threw them away almost immediately...

I checked on www.lego.com afterward, and found a press statement (January 20,
2003) that they had won a lawsuit against this or a similar company in Chinese
court.  Also, there's a January 22, 2003 press release about 100 products being
pulled from the Hong Kong Toy Fair.  Check the press archives...it's a yearly
thing, apparently.

(...) Of course it is. Getting the products pulled from HKTF doesn't mean anything if the stores still buy them from the supplier. Obviously the stores either get buyers there before TLC reps can have the items pulled, or they just play along with (...) (21 years ago, 21-Jan-04, to lugnet.general)

Hey All, Did anyone hear about all the "copies" of lego products? TLC posted this on the 14th (URL) This article tells about many of the "copies" that other companies makes. There is one with a picture on the Lego website (at the link above) that is (...) (21 years ago, 21-Jan-04, to lugnet.general)
