Trademarks and misspellings.... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) Like 'LEGO'? ;) Is it misspelled or just invented? Either way, it's not a word that's likely to be recognized by many scholars as being spelled correctly. (...) Actually, there's a very serious reason why companies purposely misspell words (...) (21 years ago, 21-Mar-03, to lugnet.general, lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Trademarks and misspellings.... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) DUDE! Do your lego research! 'LEGO' was originally derived by Ole Kirk Christianson as a contraction of the Danish phrase 'leg godt,' meaning, "play well." However, 'lego' is also latin for 'to put together.' <snip> (...) Actually, lego was (...) (21 years ago, 21-Mar-03, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Trademarks and misspellings... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

DUDE! I totally agree with you on the whole phonetic-spelling-is-better thing. I know that English has the most horrific spelling of any language on the planet, but if people are writing in that language, then they should spell the words right. (...)   Re: Trademarks and misspellings.... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) All true. And good to point out. I guess my point was to illustrate that the LEGO company name is one of those words you won't find in a standard English dictionary... for the reason that it's an obscure or otherwise unique word that could be (...)   Re: Trademarks and misspellings.... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) In Portuguese it's a 1st person Present form of "to leave legacy" (as in a will, "I leave... to..."). Try to find LEGO-related websites in Portuguese to see what I'm talking about - about half the sites refer to legal talk over legacies :-/ (...) (21 years ago, 21-Mar-03, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Trademarks and misspellings... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) I don't know that I'd call it horrific, but it's certainly in a class of its own. I have found that by trying to understand the etymology (1) of certain words you can actually grow fond of the bizarre ways in which they are spelt... or is it (...)   Re: Trademarks and misspellings... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) Actually, it has been more or less officially done. When Norway became an independent country, they tried to rid the Norwegian language of the influence from the two former mothercountries, Denmark and Sweden. This resulted in the constructed (...)   Re: Trademarks and misspellings.... oh my! (WAS:Re: Where did the lego's go?)

(...) Man, I had no idea anyone EVER took what I said seriously. : ) Just so everyone knows, whenever I post ANYTHING on the internet (here, there, anywhere), it's not meant to be taken too seriously. It's just the internet, and I've never met (...) (21 years ago, 25-Mar-03, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

WARNING: Overly analytical and highly anal retentive reply follows. :) (...) I guess my honest and sincere response to that statement would be: Why wouldn't you expect to be taken seriously? If you reread your posting: (URL) much of the message you (...) (21 years ago, 26-Mar-03, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) I'm not sure what "lacking sharp distinctness or clarity" has to do with being serious or not. ;) Sincerely... but not seriously, Allan B. (21 years ago, 26-Mar-03, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
