Okay, this brings me to my big surprise - robotics at 35000. (!)  I'd
thought of this as a relatively small niche of Lego builders.  Twice as much
volume as Trains? or Space? or Castle?  Are there really twice as many
people using Mindstorms than making spaceships (or castles, or whatever)?
Or do robotics people post twice as much?  Any thoughts?

My understanding is you don't have to be part of Lugnet to post to .robotics
so that group has a much bigger pool of readers/posters.  James B. explained
that that was why some of the names of the people posting to .robotics
appear on the web interface in a light gray color-- they are posting from
someplace outside Lugnet.  That must have something to do with the numbers.

I think James Brown provides a reasonable explanation that most can
understand.  I think this is why:

Note: The lugnet.robotics newsgroup and the lugnet.robotics@lugnet.com
mailing lists are gatewayed with the lego-robotics@crynwr.com mailing list.
(See Russell Nelson’s LEGO Mindstorms Internals webpage for more details
about the lego-robotics@crynwr.com mailing list or how to unsubscribe from it.)

It is on the lugnet.robotics newsgroup page.  There is a gateway link
between this group and lugnet.robotics.  That is why there is a different
shade of color when they post.  I think it is neet to see some branching.
I don't see why other common theme groups gateway (like FBTB, etc) to
gain a wider list of viewers...

I don't know that is my opinion.  The moderators/web masters of those
boards/groups may not agree.  I understand.  I was just making an example.

Thanks,

Ben
