I'll add in here, that I was guessing. I was figuring around 5
machines/operator, and a fair overhead/support. For example, if you don't have
any production, you don't require _any_ QA. Also, if you figure 500 machines
(a possible number, but I think rather high), then you are talking between
10-50 people/shift (50 is too many, for a continous process, with only 94
workers). What I did was roughly, divide into 3 (33/shift) then subtract 13
(for Management/Janitors/maintance mechanics(very possibly low) (gives 20), so
you have about 20 people directly involved in molding/QA/ _printing_ (I am
assuming that some printing is done in Enfield too...I know that when
Sampsonite had the Canadian operation, printing was done...). So, by giving
each person 2.5 machines (probably low, as Larry says, but I doubt 5K machines
either :), you get 10 people/shift directly operating machines (feeding
plastic, changing molds, ect.) My experience is mostly through what my dad has
said about packaging medicines (for NuPharm and Organon, if you are wondering),
and they had _every_ machine manned all the time. Lego claims to have very
high QA, so would likely have the same sort of standards...at least, I think
they _used_ to.
I also don't know how often the molds are changed (a big issue in
downtime/manning) or PM (or even shifting...if there is one shift, then more
machines operated for less time...), and I would certanly consider Larry's
statement (of 100-500 machines) to be in the relm of possible...5K, well, I
doubt that...
