Well, there is the 1x1 brick with a stud on each of its four sides.
There were a few of these in RoboForce, I think the RoboMaster.

One thing I noticed is that some of the pieces allow connection of studs (...) (26 years ago, 4-Jan-99, to lugnet.general)
