I was looking at my copy of THE ULTIMATE LEGO BOOK, which is a glorified
book on the LEGO Model Builders, and what they've created for the
LEGOLANDs, and 2 questions came to mind.

The book is great... just got mine the other day.  But as others have
mentioned, it's a study in frustration.  The sheer flaunting of the parts
used in these models made me feel ill.  There simply HAS to be a compromise
between LEGO's current bulk parts policy and something that would make
serious builders and collectors happy.

Whenever I look at LEGOLAND buildings (such as the US Capitol), all
columns are made of cylinders of macaroni bricks.  Unfortunately these
have a "Swiss Cheese" look to them with all those holes showing.  That
is kind of unsightly.  It detracts from the large models.  Too bad TLG
didn't continue to make at least some of these macaroni bricks without
the missing notches.  They would certainly have improved the look of the
buildings.  Ditto for the newer 4x4 quarter circle bricks.  Some of
these should have been without those 2 missing notches of plastic as
well.

Gary, thanks to one of your previous parts postings, I was wondering the
same thing when I was looking at these buildings and their swiss chees
columns.  Surely if they can produce that many grey, beige and other
special colors for these builders, they can get them the best design of the
parts as well.

Apart from this (and a few other minor things) the models are superb
though, I must admit.

Getting off my soapbox now,

Get back up there Gary. You've earned the right to question things like
this due to your volume of knowledge (and respect) of the history of LEGO.
The company would do well to take a lesson from your interest in their own
product's history.  I found the timeline in the book interesting, but not
nearly as complete as I would like.

Regards,
Allan
