Sorry for another late response. Awhile back I started scanning old
Mania magazines, and learned something about this Lego Island game. Lego
Island was the first Lego video game. When it was first released, it
included a comic, which I thought was cool, since I collected comics at one
time, and still have a Pirates comic from 1990. When TLG began releasing
other video games (Creator, Chess and Loco) with mini-figs (I guess the
comic didn't help boost sales enough) they started putting mini-figs in Lego
Island as well. For some reason, all of these games were sold with either a
mini-fig included or with a mail in card - I don't know why. I got all the
mini-figs and all the games, and noticed that the mail in cards (at least
those I got) let you check the figure you wanted, so I used the coupon from
Lego Loco to get another Chess (King) mini-fig (incidentally Lego Loco and
Lego Chess came packaged together in shrink wrap from Costco for $19.99 -
pretty good buy, IMO). Now I wonder if the new games which don't currently
include mini-figs will eventually have mini-figs included to boost sales. I
think the Racers game is bound to be popular, and so a free mini-fig is not
required. Ramble, ramble...

| (...) Nope. The 'first edition' of LEGO Island included both the limited-edition InfoManiac minifig, and a manual/comic book. I'm not sure if that's the same comic as you mentioned. But the minifig was definitely in the first wave of the software. (...) (25 years ago, 28-Oct-99, to lugnet.games.lego.island, lugnet.general)
