From the very first basic sets of 1949, until 1965.... all Lego Basic Sets were
nicely housed in flat boxes with all the elements displayed in checkerboard and
zig-zag patterns. It was almost like opening a box of chocolates, with
everything so nicely displayed.

Eric and I each purchased one of these MISB shrink wrapped boxes from a
Wisconsin seller last year... who had them stored for decades in an unplugged
refrigerator!!
This was the type of set I got as my very first set in 1960 as a kid. However,
once you opened the box and busted thru the shrink wrap, the box was no longer
very useful for storing them.

P.S. Lugnet has a (not so good) picture of a 1949 #700/1 set with the
checkerboard and zig-zag patterns. It looks almost eatable!....
