The first thing I noticed is that the newer version of the original helmet
(the thick chinstrap version) has been assigned the new 3DN 593.  I
thought that was kinda strange, since every other time I recall LDraw
tracking two versions of the same basic part (e.g., 4085) the standard has
been to append a,b,etc. to the part number.  I'm surprised that these two
are so different as to merit different unofficial numbers, since I can
barely tell them apart[1].

The single-character suffixes are used, not because parts have multiple versions, but
because different parts sometimes have the same number.  If a new version of a part
comes out with a different number, we'd use the new number when modeling the part.
And if a new part comes out that walks over an old part's ID, we'll use character
suffixes (suffii? suffices?) to differentiate.[1]

With 3DN's, the parts are all 'different numbers' - there's no reason to pile up
letter suffixes on a single number (unless you're a member of the 3DN Conservation
Club ;).

The more arresting thing is that they've been renamed "Minifig Crash
Helmet. . .".  First thought[2]: that's going to make these parts hard to
find on a list of parts.  Second thought: what the heck is a "crash
helmet"?  A trip to dictionary.com later, third thought: well, that name
applies to the Town usage of these parts, but certainly not the Castle or
Space usages.  Which is odd, because I thought LDraw was moving away from
theme-specific names.  Heck, why not just call them "Town Helmet. . .", at
that rate?

We're getting away from grouping parts by theme.  We still have to call them
*something*.  And "Minifig Helmet Crash" seemed really weird, as a name.  I'm open to
other suggestions.

Anyone have any thoughts, knowledge, or wisdom on these
suddenly-mysterious parts?

This all started because the old helmets (or variations of the old helmet) had gotten
labeled as "Minifig Helmet Type 1" and "Minifig Helmet Type 2".  In my mind, these
two parts were a single "type" - I thought the Type 1 and Type 2 was confusing.  So
Chris and I discussed some options, and published the results.

1) The other reason for alphabetic suffixes is when parts arrive on a runner, with a
single part number.  This happens with minifig mechanical tools, castle plumes,
stickers, and a few others.

(...) Personally, I've thought of the "crash helmet" as the helmet that can accept a visor. You could also use the word "modern" as a descriptor. Thus, my two suggestions for 2446 are Minifig Helmet, Modern Style & Minifig Helmet with Visor Pivots I (...) (21 years ago, 11-Dec-03, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts, lugnet.db.brictionary)
