I am surprised no one has mentioned the fibblesnork minifig guide. This
is an excellent way to determine what figs go with a set. John DiR has
turned it inside out so you can root through figs and determine what
sets they go with.

I have to go to bed now... I can't find the definitive URL for either of
these. The links page, (http://www.lugnet.com/links/) while spiffier in
appearance, is now harder to use, IMHO. I think it would be better if
ALL sites were indexed by owner, and also categorized. Mine is just
listed bare, but can be categorised under several different categories.
But some sites are listed ONLY by category so I have to read the mind of
the categorizer....

I think John's reverse fig index is in here somewhere:
http://www114.pair.com/ig88/lego/index.htm

and I think the fibblesnork fig guide is in here somewhere:

I just recently purchased a 10 gallon bucket full of lego sets at a garage
sale (for only $12.00!) for my two young children. Problem is-no instructions
to tell me what I have. It looks like I have two castles, two boats with
hulls and motor capability and much of the "City" type sets. The castles
could possibly be the Dark Lords or Black Knight set-ups. I tried calling
Lego to get instructions, however they don't have them both. The sheilds for
the figures have either lions or dragons on them. Can anyone help me help my
kids?? Thanks

The shields with the lions would be the the Royal Knight sets, I think.

Either that or Crusaders/Lionhearts!

The shields with dragons on them either go back to the Black Knight
sets or the Dragon Master sets, most likely.  On the bigger shields, are the
dragons blue, or green?

The easiest way to narrow them down would be if you can describe the
big green baseplates that the castles are made to sit upon.

Well... we're kind of assuming that there are actually large castles in the
collection if we say that :) .And, if there AREN'T any baseplates, they could
be old-style castles... There are actually a bunch of ways of narrowing them
down though, but I think we'd need a lot more info to do so...

If there are baseplates, then yes, it's pretty easy to figure out what castle
it is... after all, only Black Knight's Castle, King's Mountain Fortress, Royal
Knight's castle, and the Fire Breathing Fortress came on large baseplates; and
each was different (except for Black Knight's Castle and King's Mountain
Fortress)...

Another clue is the color of the castle wall sections. If they're light grey,
it's probably an old castle set... black would indicate a fairly newer one...
and dark grey would indicate Fright Knights! The other castle clue would be the
number of "decorated" castle wall elements, and the color of any roofing that
might be included... of course, any slopes could be from things like the boats
and town themes as well... so that might be less likely to provide clues...

Anyway, as Eric said, the best solution is to head on over to
http://www.brickshelf.com and start browsing the 6000's for castle sets, and
see what looks like it matches...

Happy hunting!

(...) I linked to Fibblesnork pages with the hope she'd check the minifigures out, but I didn't know about John DiR's page. Cool. Thanks, Larry. This is one of the most useful things about Fibblesnork - the minifig scans. Fibblesnork is no longer (...) (25 years ago, 3-Dec-99, to lugnet.castle)
