I just wanted to share some information that you may not have thought about
or, have thought about and wished that TLC still did think about.  I've been
doing research for my Castle Wall Components project recently.  This was
because I had decided to do what I originally did not want to do; copy
original sets.  But, I've thought better of this, and have decided to build
all the originals, and then twist them to my way of thinking, and make them
part of my wall.
Anyway, my research has led me to find that there were 8 original components
before TLC abandoned this idea.  I'll list them for you if you are not
familiar with these sets. 6034 - Black Monarch's Ghost, 6040 - Blacksmith
Shop, 6041 - Armor Shop, 6059 - Knight's Stronghold, 6061 - Siege Tower, 6062 -
Battering Ram, 6067 - Guarded Inn, and finally 6074 - Black Falcon's
Fortress. One small bit of trivia is that 6081 - Kings Mountain Fortress, has
a connection pin in the appropriate spot for adding to the other sets, it's
just a bit low because it's on a baseplate and not on a full plate. Arguably,
this could be considered as a 9th, but it might be stretching it.

It amazes me that some of the most sought after Castle sets now, are sets from
this system.  I shake my head over King Leo's Castle and wonder why they
couldn't go back to this wonderful system.  Ok, It's not perfect, as you can
plainly see, I've had to change mine so that they were actually usable, but
for a youngster, these are awesome sets, and well worth continuing to make
more components for it.  You can always use another kind of Inn, or different
wall tower, or covered bazaar/market, or more wall parts.  If you put both the
Black Falcon's Fortress and the Kings Mountain Fortress in the same category,
then you have two fort's' to add to the wall as well.  If they had made a more
Cathedral type of castle, with flying buttress' you could have converted it
into a church, (if you wanted to).  You can't have a walled community without
a few "town houses," for that warren type of look.  A Castle type of town
square, with a fountain would have been nice.  Perhaps even a Roman built or
inspired Bath for the minifigs.

Well, that's it for now.  I'm off to build these great sets again, and make
them more usable.

Rich

(...) That's fascinating! Just out of curiosity, how did you discover this? I agree with you that this Castle system was a gem. I remember well the first time that I saw the sets - in a Target store in 1984, I believe. My jaw just dropped...they (...) (24 years ago, 23-May-00, to lugnet.castle)

(...) Nitpick! You forgot 6073 Knight's Castle! 6073 and 6074 connect well together, too. :) On top of that, 6080 King's Castle and 6085, when opened, can both accept wall pieces, although they are on baseplates. Anyway, I'd love to see TLC return (...) (24 years ago, 23-May-00, to lugnet.castle)
