How big is your city? Is the bridge the only way in? If so, then it needs to
be big and pretty permanant (stone). If it's just a minor way, a backway for
example, the bridge doesn't need to be huge and should be probably made of stone
and wood.
Capitol City - my next giant city will have a huge bridge with a gatehouse on
both sides and will be made of pure stone (with a drawbridge in between the two
gatehouses). Inside the city there will be little bridges that are made of
stone and are open - 6 studs across.
David Eaton's village would probably have two 6x6 brown plates on a bunch of
wooden bricks if there was water anywhere nearby ;)
Stone (gray bricks) are probably a good bet (or a black bridge could be seen to
be made out of wood ... or would that look weird?)
