The problem is that an 8 stud diameter door is way too big. Actually,
since human doors are 5 high, a 4 stud diameter door would probably be
ideal for Hobbits. Using similar techniques, I just mocked up such a
door. Use two 1x6x2 arches, one inverted, with a plate between them. Due
to the way a Hobbit hole will be constructed, I settled on having the
inverted arch just sitting in a slot, held in by other bricks.
The hinge is a little tricky. I used 1x2 plate hinges with 2/3 fingers.
The hinge is mounted to a 1x2/1x4 bumper bracket, which is mounted on a
1x2 tile with center stud because the hinge arrangement must be a 1/2
stud offset away from the doorway. The hinge plate is then covered with
a tile so the SNOT arrangement is one stud thick, which means the whole
thing can be made more sturdy by surrounding with other bricks.
Unfortunately I don't have a good macro in my camera so it will be
difficult for me to show the details, but it only took me 10 minutes to
work the whole thing out.
