Re: Partsref is Moving to LUGNET

(...) Are you familiar with the make utility? It allows you to describe an arbitrary set of modules, with their associated interdependencies, and then re-build only the modules which have changed and modules dependant upon them. Of course, using (...) (25 years ago, 2-Dec-99, to lugnet.cad.dev, lugnet.db.brictionary, lugnet.cad.ray)

Re: Partsref is Moving to LUGNET

(...) That's fine with me. The only downside is applying updates. When new parts are released for LDraw, I don't update individual partsref images and pages, I just regenerate the whole shebang. So any manual edits would probably get overwritten. (...) (25 years ago, 2-Dec-99, to lugnet.cad.dev, lugnet.db.brictionary, lugnet.cad.ray)

Re: Partsref is Moving to LUGNET

One thing I noticed with the DAT explorer is that POV rendered images look _MUCH_ better with the lossless PNG format thatn with JPEG. Perhaps appropriate use of the JPEG smoothing function would help the the tests I did looked bad even at 100% (...)   Re: Partsref is Moving to LUGNET

(...) IMHO, the best thing is having both (a) super-quick-loading GIFs and (b) high-quality POV JPEGs, and then letting the user decide which one to view. A while back, someone even suggested having spinning/rotating POV-rendered images for each (...) (25 years ago, 1-Dec-99, to lugnet.cad.dev, lugnet.db.brictionary, lugnet.cad.ray)

If you are running Windows 95/98/NT and have 1) installed POV-Ray for Windows ((URL) and 2) copied l3p.exe ((URL) to e.g. C:\Windows (or to any other directory in your PATH) and 3) installed LDraw in e.g. C:\Lego\LDraw then type in a DOS-box (...) (25 years ago, 1-Dec-99, to lugnet.cad.ray)

Jamie Obrien: [ asks for a ray tracing howto ] While we are waiting for a good ray tracing howto you could have a look at this information: (URL) somebody could write a short ray tracing howto, I am sure Tood could be convinced to host it under the (...) Dave Schuler: (...) If you choose the maximum quality setting in l3p you should get the LEGO logo on the studs. Play well, Jacob ---...--- -- E-mail: sparre@cats.nbi.dk -- -- Web...: <URL:(URL) -- ---...--- (25 years ago, 23-Nov-99, to lugnet.cad.ray)

  The embossed Lego logo

On some POV-ray Lego images I've seen the Lego logo rendered on each stud; forgive a potentially simple question, but how is this done? I expect I'm missing something fairly basic, but my renderings show only smooth, flat studs. Any suggestions? (...) (25 years ago, 23-Nov-99, to lugnet.cad.ray)

  Re: povray

(...) You know what, I actually think you are right. :-) (...) Yes. I'd like to try my "walk through" on a larger scene, which could actually be walked through, but the computer running the program doesn't have enough RAM to render a large model. (...)   Re: povray

(...) I agree walking through or around a model is a pretty cool idea, but I get frustrated by how slowly I walk :) I think a few set views would be great to get an overall image of the model. Then if I wanted to see details or interiors, I could (...) (25 years ago, 17-Nov-99, to lugnet.cad.ray, lugnet.cad)

  Re: povray

(...) Thanks! I was a bit worried that all the arrow-buttons are be a bit confusing. They probably are, too, at least in the beginning. [X-post lugnet.cad for more exposure] (...) The interface looks great! I like the many options and corner views. The 'figs are a nice tough too. Now you just need to add more models! It's a pity it's slow... Just one suggestion/idea: How about (...) (25 years ago, 16-Nov-99, to lugnet.cad.ray, lugnet.cad)

  Re: povray

(...) That was what I suspected. I simply wanted to play around a bit with the idea, just for the fun of it. I don't have any computer hooked up to the net which is powerful enough to do this on a large scale, so I can't take over the project. (...) I haven't released the source yet because it's not ready for prime time. I will release the source under GPL when I feel it's ready. (part of my hesitation has to do with CGI security concerns).   Re: povray

(...) I didn't get any answer from Kevin, so I made my own DAT explorer program. It was about time I learned to do some Perl CGI stuff anyway.
