As we get nearer to the election, I wanted to post my thoughts on what I
think the steering committee should look like.

We're electing the SC to lead the LDraw organization.  To codify it,
define what it really is, and how it works.  In the past we have all
worked in a somewhat random manner.  Decisions were "reached" when the
arguments about them stopped - often, taking weeks, or even months and
years.

With the powers we've given the SC, most decisions will be made by these
5 people.  And since it's a much smaller group, a busy discussion over a
weekend might yield a policy - and all that with little oversight from
the community.

Um, I feel a bit foolish, but since Andrew brought it up I guess I
should ask.  Are there really two different LSCs, a Steering Committee
and a Standards Committee?  If so, what's the difference?  I must've
missed that somewhere.

The LDraw Standards Committee, or LSC, is a special committee, recognised by the
bylaws as a special sort of SIG with special processes, that is in charge of
developing, codifying, and fostering the growth of the file, naming, coding and
other appropriate standards that make up an important part of the LDraw System.
It is primarily technical in focus.

The Steering Committee is charged with running/leading the overall organization
(based on input from the community, of course). It is primarily organizational
in focus.

Since it is the *LDraw* Steering Committee it does, unfortunately, have the
initials LSC, but to counteract confusion most of those of us that have been
organising things so far have been trying to use the short form SteerCo instead
of calling it LSC.

The LDraw Standards Committee has already been elected and is hard at work. This
election is for the Steering Committee and it is an artifact of how the
organization formed that the elections have been in the reverse of the order you
would expect them to be.

Hope that helps clear things up.

Thanks,

Don
