Hmm, I'm using 4.0, but it used to compile and link with the older
versions.  (I just forgot to set up the projection matrix for the
offscreen stuff so it didn't work yet in ldglite 0.9.2).  At some
point (4.0?) the Mesa folks pulled OSMesa out into its own library.

If off-screen rendering is disabled, everything seems to
work fine.

What version of Mesa is installed on ldraw.org?

I think it is 3.4.

I'll try and login over the weekend and build it there.

Also, I've been unable to use the "linux installation instructions"
with Mandrake 7 and above.  I have to configure with --prefix=/usr or
something like that (according to the Mesa instructions for linux) to
get it to work.  Mandrake doesn't come set up to look in /usr/local,
and I don't exactly know how to make it look there.

I have extended the installation instructions, so they
(should) handle this problem.

Maybe something to do with ldconfig.

Yes "/etc/ld.so.conf" and "ldconfig".

And that's another thing.  I seem to have to
run ldconfig to get it to use the newly installed Mesa libraries, but
I really don't even know what ldconfig is for.  I'm gonna have to get
a newer linux book than my ancient slackware 2.0 volume...

"ldconfig" sets up the cache of dynamically loadable
libraries used by "ld".

Play well,
