Are we sure that folks aren't confusing this very old item with the
fairly-brand-new towball-connected-to-a-Mini-Figure-Grip element?
That latter mostly comes in Dk-Grey and has ALWAYS had a hole through
it.  It's not the same thing, however; this latter element doesn't
have a stud involved at all.

I'm not confusing them.  But I can't speak for other people.  Once we've
got part-files created, we'll have firmer ground to talk from.

No.  I am very distinctly talking about the older item.  I'm not sure what the
new item you are talking about, but both of the elements that I described were
in my collection years before Dk Grey became available, and both have a ball and
a stud with a hole through it.

Again, confusion (<g>):  The question on the table is whether the BALL
has a hole in it, NOT the stud... (All of mine have always had a hole
through the stud).

Of course, you did write "hole in the tow ball" earlier, so I'm
presuming that this was just a slip on this reply.

The instructions for the grey versions don't show a hole in the ball,
but again that doesn't mean they don't actually have one.  From when I
built my Launch Command sets, I recall no hole, but the sets are not
currently accessible to me to check on them.

----

BTW, the grey versions came out in 1980 (1 set) and 1995 (2 sets).  The
newer element (see http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=6490 --
it's the hook on the string connected to the bridge) came out in 1997:

Ball Joint/Hitch (Male), Mini-Figure Grasp/Hook

Qty Color   Set  U.S. Set Name              Year Theme
--- ------- ---- -------------------------- ---- -------
4   Dk-Grey 1782 Discovery Station          1997 Divers
2   Dk-Grey 6441 Deep Sea Refuge            1997 Divers
2   Dk-Grey 6442 Sting Ray Explorer         1997 Divers
1   Dk-Grey 6490 Amazon Crossing            1997 Outback
1   Dk-Grey 6559 Deep Sea Bounty (European) 1997 Divers
3   Dk-Grey 6560 Diving Expedition Explorer 1997 Divers

So the grey figure hand and the new tow-ball-hook in dark grey aren't
THAT far apart.

Steve: the ball-hook element is used in Divers submarines as the grasps
on the arms; help?
